A woman from Onslow County has been charged with a range of felonies and misdemeanors following a thorough investigation by multiple agencies. The investigation, which spanned several years, revealed instances of arson and child abuse.
A woman named Chastity Dawn Keeter, 36, from Jacksonville, has been arrested, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Keeter is facing multiple charges, including second-degree arson, first-degree arson, burning personal property, and attempted first-degree arson. These charges are considered to be serious felonies. According to the NCDOI, Keeter has also been charged with three misdemeanor counts of child abuse.
Officials have reported that special agents from the NC Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division worked together with various law enforcement agencies to investigate a series of intentional fires in the Onslow County/Jacksonville area dating back to 2017.
According to a public release, Keeter was already set to appear in court for two felony charges of arson that took place on March 23, 2023. The arrest warrants state that the other offenses took place on various dates in 2017 and 2018.
In July of 2018, Keeter was previously arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s office for second-degree arson. The charges were related to setting two fires at the same home. In 2004, she was convicted of a second-degree arson charge in Rockingham County.
Keeter was taken into custody on July 2 for the most recent charges and is currently being detained on secured bonds totaling $205,000 for the nine different charges. She made an appearance in Onslow County Court on July 5th as reported by WCTI News.
“The successful conclusion of this extensive investigation required strong collaboration and dedication from our agents and partner law enforcement agencies,” Commissioner Causey expressed. “I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who played a part in this.”
