A plea of guilty to second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder has been entered by Gerardo Alvarez, 30, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. The shooting incident, which occurred in April 2023, resulted in the death of Maria Ledesma Ramirez, 25, and left a teenager injured.
Witnesses at the scene reported that Alvarez calmly ordered food and patiently waited for Ramirez to approach the front counter. It was at that moment that he tragically shot her. Alvarez and Ramirez reportedly had a heated dispute regarding their relationship and children before the tragic incident occurred.

According to Phoenix Police, Alvarez quickly left the Burger King following the shooting incident. He was eventually located in south Phoenix and taken into custody.
Alvarez has been sentenced to 42 years in prison, according to MCAO as reported by Fox Arizona.
“The tragic incident not only claimed the life of a young mother, but it also exposed several young individuals to danger, leaving them with lasting trauma from the defendant’s heartless behavior,” expressed Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “By committing this offense, he caused significant impact on numerous lives, particularly his own young children.”
