Rapper Nelly was taken into custody in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Maryland Heights, according to a spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Nelly, also known as Cornell I. Haynes Jr., was stopped for ID verification by the Missouri Gaming Commission while leaving the Hollywood Casino in Maryland Heights near St. Louis at around 4:45 a.m. on Wednesday. He was later apprehended for an outstanding warrant related to his failure to secure car insurance.
After conducting a search of Nelly’s car, officers from the Missouri State Highway made an additional discovery of ecstasy pills. As a result, they have decided to charge the entertainer with drug possession. Nelly was later taken to the Maryland Heights Police Department and eventually released.
Nelly’s representatives did not respond to Variety’s request for comment right away.
Nelly recently finished a journey across the United States, accompanying Janet Jackson on her ninth concert tour. The summer leg was a continuation of Jackson’s 2023 “Together Again” tour, which was the most successful tour of Jackson’s career. Nelly’s most recent performance took place on July 30 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
He has taken a break from his solo music career, with his most recent solo album being 2021’s “Heartland,” where he worked with country artists like Florida Georgia Line. Recently, Nelly has signed with WME for global representation.
This comes after touring with T.I., Ja Rule, and Ashanti, as well as a short trek with Nashville singer Chase McDaniel. Nelly has also made several appearances at music festivals.
