A woman has been taken into custody and is facing charges of felony child abuse following an incident where she discovered her child in an unresponsive state, as reported by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff, they promptly attended to an emergency call at Iredell Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 1, at midnight.
Upon arrival at the hospital, deputies were informed that the child had been discovered unresponsive by his mother, Brittany Dawn Riley, aged 31, who promptly brought him to the emergency room.
Authorities report that healthcare professionals quickly identified the child’s overdose and promptly administered Narcan.
According to the sheriff, Riley confessed to using illegal drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, at her home earlier in the day as per WBTV News.
Riley was subsequently arrested and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center. They have been charged with felony child abuse and are currently being held under a secured bond of $100K.
The child is anticipated to make a complete recovery.
