Infamous Drug Ring Leader Sentenced in Oneida County; Was on Run for Several Years

Oneida County, NY: A resident from Utica who led a fentanyl operation in Oneida County learned his sentencing outcome in federal court on Thursday, March 7.

Ivan Rodriguez Sr., aged 48 from Utica, was sentenced to 121 months in federal prison for conspiracy to possess fentanyl with intent to distribute, distributing over 400 grams of fentanyl, and money laundering.

Rodriguez Sr. was identified as the leader of a drug trafficking operation in and around Oneida County from May 2020 to October 2021 after an extensive investigation involving various law enforcement agencies.

In September 2021, Rodriguez and his son, Ivan Jr., coordinated for an accomplice to travel to a fentanyl supplier in New York City. The supply was intended to be reallocated in the Utica region. Law enforcement agents intercepted the vehicle on its return to Utica and confiscated three kilograms of fentanyl hidden within a speaker in Ares’ rented car.

Rodriguez Sr. was found to have given money to a proxy buyer to purchase vehicles, such as a BMW.

His sentence is set on Thursday, May 2nd. Ares will be sentenced on Thursday, April 11.
