Authorities have accused a mother and father in Indiana of neglecting their 12-year-old daughter’s diabetes, resulting in her tragic death.
Alice Bredhold was discovered deceased in her residence in Indiana on Independence Day.
Officials reported that Alice’s parents, Ashley and Brent Bredhold, were found to be neglecting the child’s diabetes management.
Alice’s mother informed the authorities about her daughter’s Type 1 diabetes. According to her, her diabetes management involves her daughter receiving a long-acting insulin shot before bedtime and adjusting short-acting insulin doses after meals based on carbohydrate intake.
Throughout the school year, Alice reportedly arrived at school with a high blood sugar level on 34 occasions. For an entire week, her blood sugar reached dangerously high levels.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), blood sugar levels should ideally fall between 80 and 120.
According to reports, Ashley claimed that she had sent her son to check on Alice, only to discover her unconscious on the floor.
According to reports, Ashley claimed that she did not check on her daughter until two hours later.
After experiencing a significantly elevated blood sugar level, she took her medication but decided to wait an additional two hours before contacting emergency services.
According to the witness, Alice’s body felt cold and there were no signs of breathing.
A coroner determined that Alice’s cause of death was diabetic ketosis. The coroner reported that Alice’s liver was significantly larger than that of an average adult woman.
Ashley and Brent were taken into custody on Wednesday following a thorough investigation that lasted for a month. They have both been charged with neglecting a dependent.
Authorities reported that two additional children were taken out of the residence, which was found to be in a state of disarray with debris and insects present.
Both individuals are currently being detained on a bond of $100,000 each.
