Hubbard, Ohio: A worker at Ellwood Engineered Castings in Ohio died as a result of a malfunction that caused molten steel to flow on him.
Jawaylan Patterson died as a result of severe injuries sustained after an event at Ellwood Engineered Castings’ Hubbard Masury Road site in Hubbard Township, Ohio. This heartbreaking death happened just before 5 a.m. on Saturday.
According to a Hubbard Township police report, Patterson, also known as “Jay,” died at the facility during a routine operation while working an overnight shift on Saturday morning.
According to the report, Jay was down in a pit just before 5:00 a.m. when molten steel began to seep into it. A witness reported to authorities that the spill was caused by a casting fault.
“Our hearts are broken for the family, friends, and coworkers of Jawaylan and we are working to provide them with the support they need at this time,” said Pat Calligan, president of Ellwood Engineered Castings.
According to police, the victim called for everyone to move out of the way and began pushing the ladle of molten steel away from workers, but Jay was unable to escape in time.
The authorities have notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the spill.
