Woman Mistook Nail Glue as Eyedrops; Warns Others after She Glued Her Eye Shut in North Carolina

Honk News (Concord, NC) – A Concord woman, K’netha Faggart, is sharing her terrifying experience to warn others after accidentally gluing her left eye shut with nail glue. The mix-up occurred when she mistook the glue for her eye drops, leading to a painful ordeal that required medical intervention.

What Happened?

K’netha had removed her contact lenses and reached for what she thought was a bottle of eye drops on her desk. Unknowingly, she grabbed a bottle of nail glue that she had previously left out.

“It burned the holy crap out of me,” K’netha said. In a panic, she ran to the bathroom to flush her eye, only to realize her finger had also become glued to her eye.

Medical Intervention

Doctors initially tried to flush out the glue and pry her eye open but were unsuccessful. K’netha’s eyelid was glued shut to her eyeball. An ophthalmologist later performed a surgical procedure to cut the eyelid open and remove a large glob of glue.

“He could see the whole eyeball was scratched up everywhere,” K’netha explained. Despite the successful removal, some glue remains in the corner of her eye.

K’netha got a lot of care for her eye injury, like having the eye flushed and surgery to cut open the glued eyelid and get rid of a big glob of glue. Even though the surgery went well, scratches were found on her eyeball, and glue is still in the corners of her eye. After the surgery, she has to wear an eye patch for 5–7 weeks while she heals.

Even though experts are hopeful that she will fully recover, she may lose some of her sight as reported.

Family Support

K’netha’s daughter, Ria, has been her primary caregiver during the recovery process. “It’s really hard to see her like this,” Ria said. As a foster parent and caregiver, K’netha found the experience especially challenging. “Not being able to do anything at all is just terrifying,” she admitted.

A Cautionary Tale

Doctors informed K’netha that such incidents are more common than people realize. “He said this is very common. He had personally treated five other cases in a month before this,” she shared. Her advice to others: “Be very careful and make sure you always read everything before you put it in your eyes.”

Key Takeaways

  • Always double-check labels on bottles, especially when dealing with substances near the eyes.
  • Keep potentially harmful products, like nail glue, stored separately from medications or eye care items.

While K’netha faces weeks of recovery and potential vision impairment, she remains hopeful and committed to raising awareness to prevent similar accidents.
