Virginia Woman Arrested after Several Premature Babies Suffered Fractures in NICU

Honk News – (Henrico, VA) – A former hospital employee has been taken into custody regarding an incident from late 2024 that resulted in three infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Virginia’s Henrico Doctors’ Hospital suffering from “unexplainable fractures,” as reported by authorities.

Authorities have named 26-year-old Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman from Chesterfield County as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation, according to a statement released on Friday.

Strotman has been taken into custody and is confronting charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse related to the incident, which the hospital reported occurred in late November or possibly December.

A representative from HCA Virginia has verified that Strotman previously worked at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. The representative failed to specify Strotman’s position.

“In late November/December, we discovered that three babies in our Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU had unexplainable fractures, similar to an incident involving four babies in the summer of 2023,” the hospital said in a statement posted on their website Dec. 24. “We initiated a thorough internal investigation, informed the families and notified the proper authorities and regulatory agencies and worked collaboratively with them on their investigations.”

The hospital announced that they will no longer be admitting additional infants to their NICU as a precautionary measure. They have also implemented enhanced security measures, such as the installation of live-streaming technology and mandatory safety training for all caregivers.

HCA Virginia expressed their deep surprise and sorrow regarding Strotman’s arrest, emphasizing their commitment to patient care and employee support.

“For more than 30 years, the NICU at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU has provided necessary and life-saving care to babies in central Virginia and we remain focused on ensuring the availability of that care in our community,” said Laura Petrosky, HCA Virginia’s assistant vice president of strategic communications.

Authorities have indicated that they are “re-evaluating the cases from 2023 and 2024 as part of this extensive inquiry.”

“We appreciate the families’ and public’s patience as we work as thoroughly and expeditiously as possible to investigate every piece of evidence in connection to these cases,” Henrico Chief Eric D. English said in a statement.
