Toddler Overdosed on Fentanyl in Indiana; Father Arrested as Kid Ingested Pill from His Backpack

A man from Indiana has been arrested and is currently in custody following an incident where his 3-year-old daughter accidentally consumed fentanyl after accessing his outdated pill crusher. According to court documents, the father did not visit his daughter at the hospital, despite being contacted by DCS multiple times.

Devin D’rell Rollins, 25, was taken into custody on Wednesday morning by Muncie police. He is facing charges of felony neglect of a dependent. According to court records, Rollins has a history of neglect charges and currently has three active warrants. He is facing another charge after his child tested positive for drugs in a recent incident.

According to court records, on June 30th, Rollins’ 3-year-old daughter was brought to IU Ball Memorial Hospital after accidentally swallowing Tylenol while staying at her dad’s aunt’s house.

The aunt immediately dialed 911 to report that the child appeared to be lacking energy. The child’s mother later informed the police that Rollins claimed to have woken up beside their daughter, who appeared to be unresponsive.

EMS crews quickly arrived and transported the 3-year-old to IUBMH for a checkup, with Rollins reportedly accompanying them. DCS was contacted and promptly arrived at the hospital, but was unable to locate Rollins.

DCS then made 19 attempts to reach out to both Rollins and the child’s mother, going to various addresses in Muncie. Both parents failed to respond or were unable to be located.

According to the police, the child’s medical records revealed a positive test for fentanyl. Following this, officers located Rollins at his residence on Main Street in Muncie and brought him in for questioning.

According to reports, when Rollins was informed by officers about his daughter’s positive fentanyl test, he claimed that she must have accessed his previous pill crusher in his backpack.

According to reports, Rollins explained his decision to leave the house when EMS was called to assist his daughter by stating that he was aware of the impending arrival of the police and his own outstanding warrants. He later admitted that he did not visit his child in the hospital, claiming that he was aware of the ongoing police search for him and had been evading arrest for the past five years.

Rollins was arrested at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday and taken to the Delaware County Jail. He is facing one charge of neglect of a dependent, which is a level 3 felony. A date for the first hearing in his case has not been set yet as reported by NewsNation.
