Swim Coach Molested Several Underage Kids; Judge Gives Heavy Sentence for His Actions in Colorado

A man who served as a swim coach for the Boulder Swimming Club team in the late 1990s and early 2000s has been sentenced to 42 years to life in prison.

In April, Jon Beber, aged 54, was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust. The charges involved a pattern of abuse. Both are considered serious crimes.

The 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office recently issued a statement, in which District Attorney Michael Doughtery expressed his satisfaction with the “lengthy” sentence, deeming it as the appropriate result.

In 2022, the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office initiated an investigation after three victims came forward, resulting in charges being filed against Beber. Beber faced allegations of sexual misconduct involving underage swimmers during the late 90s and early 2000s.

“As the judge noted, this type of case is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Doughtery said. “Parents drop kids off for practice or school and hope that the adults in charge are not abusing their position of trust. This defendant did exactly that, for years. It is only because of the victims’ courage and perseverance that we were able to bring charges all these years later and secure justice for them and their families.”

The court sentenced Beber to serve the following sentences consecutively:

  • 18 years to life, followed by 20 years to life of parole for each charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – a pattern of abuse
  • 6 years in the Department of Corrections, followed by 10 years to life of parole, for sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust

During Beber’s time with the swim team, there were allegations made against him, although no official reports were filed.

Concerned parents reportedly confronted the former swim coach regarding allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with several underage swimmers on the team. According to investigators, this incident led to his decision to resign from the team and depart from Colorado in 2002.

The Boulder DA’s office provided community resources such as reporting to local law enforcement or contacting local victim advocacy organizations for assistance.
