“This is not something we see every day, but we are glad that people seem to be okay,” police chief Elaine Moya said.
An investigation is underway by the FAA and the NTSB following the incident where the aircraft was severed in two upon collision.
Observers at the location reported seeing the Piper PA-31 struggling in the sky, appearing low and unstable as it descended.
“To the left of me you start seeing on the wall a shadow of this plane,” Tony Poynor, a motorist, told the Associated Press. “Then it passed over the top of my truck. And it’s still horizontal at this point, then about a quarter of a mile in front of me it starts to wobble.”
As reported by the Victoria Advocate, the aircraft was observed in the area for several hours on Wednesday, having taken off from Victoria Regional Airport at 9:52 a.m., and it was noted to be circling the airport.
The area close to the local high school continues to be shut down while officials conduct their investigation.
