Minnesota Senator Arrested on Burglary Charges

The authorities in Becker County have apprehended the Democratic senator representing Woodbury, Minnesota, on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

State Senator Nicole Mitchell (DFL-Woodbury) was arrested and had her arraignment on Monday. She is booked at Becker County Jail.

Chief of Police of Detroit Lakes Steve Todd reported that a homeowner reported a burglary at 4:45 a.m., prompting the response of the department. Officers searched the premises and discovered a woman inside the residence, subsequently identified as Mitchell.

Monday afternoon found Mitchell in custody once more. The department has transmitted its reports to the Becker County Attorney, who will determine charges, according to Chief Todd.

Since being elected in 2022, Mitchell has been a DFL state senator for the first time. She serves as the Veterans and State and Local Government Committee vice chair.

Mitchell worked as a television meteorologist in the Twin Cities prior to entering politics. She also held the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Air National Guard.

According to the Star Tribune, the alleged burglary took place in 2022 on the block where Mitchell’s stepmother and her late father resided, according to county property tax records.

“The public expects legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said in a statement to CBS News. “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law and in her role at the Legislature.”
