Grandmother Sentenced after She put Toddler into Boiling Water as a Punishment in Ohio

Mason, OH: A Mason woman got seven to ten and a half years in jail for putting her granddaughter in boiling water. The incident happened in 2023.

Warren County Prosecutor David P. Fornshell said that Lashawnda Walters, 51, was sentenced by Warren County Common Pleas Judge Robert Peeler after pleading guilty to endangering children, which is a second-degree crime, and tampering with evidence, which is a third-degree felony.

According to Fornshell, the crimes happened on March 30, 2023, while the victim, a girl of two years, was living with Walters, who is her grandma. The child had an accident that morning and wet her diaper. Fornshell said that after the accident, Walters hit the girl and put her in a bath with water that was up to 126 degrees Fahrenheit.

He said that the girl got second and third-degree burns on more than 17% of her body, including her feet, legs, thighs, buttocks, and vaginal area because she was forced into the water.

Reporter Fornshell said it took more than five hours for the girl to be taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital – Liberty Campus and checked out. She was then taken to Shriners Children’s Ohio in Cincinnati, where she needed surgery to replace the damaged skin.

In Walters’ home, Fornshell said, there were security cameras that caught what happened before this happened. He said that while the police were carrying out a search warrant at Walters’ home, she was deleting videos from earlier that day to stop them from getting video proof of what she did.
