The amazing ensemble of Hulu’s Dopesick dives into the terrible realities of America’s opioid problem, bringing personalities and real-world figures to life. The miniseries focuses on the human component of the opioid crisis, portraying the experiences of individuals whose lives were impacted by OxyContin over the course of eight episodes. Dopesick, starring a cast of outstanding actors and actresses, puts a human face to an epidemic that has afflicted hundreds of thousands of Americans.
Dopesick, adapted for television by Danny Strong, is based on a genuine story of pain, deception, and addiction. The series is based on Beth Macy’s book – Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America, covers the narrative of how OxyContin and opioids decimated the United States, as well as the cover-up that allowed it to proliferate.

Purdue Pharma’s OxyContin, introduced in 1996, is a highly addictive painkiller that was misrepresented to doctors and patients alike as non-addictive. Purdue initially targeted tiny, blue-collar communities in rural locations, and these tranquil towns soon experienced rises in fatalities and violence unlike anything they’d ever seen before. It’s a dramatized version of a topic that has already been told in documentaries such as Netflix’s opioid documentary.
1. ‘Dr. Samuel Finnix’ is played by Michael Keaton.
Dr. Samuel Finnix, the man at the core of the opioid problem in Finch Creek, Virginia, is played by Michael Keaton. Dr. Finnix started prescribing OxyContin out of care for his patients, but he quickly finds that the “wonder medication” he’s peddling is wreaking havoc on his little Appalachian village.
Michael Keaton is a Hollywood legend, best known for playing Bruce Wayne in Batman (1989), Betelgeuse in Beetlejuice (1988), Riggan in Birdman (2014), Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and giving his voice to several animated films and TV shows.
2. ‘Rick Mountcastle’ is played by Peter Sarsgaard.
Peter Sarsgaard plays Rick Mountcastle, one of two U.S. Attorneys seeking legal action against Purdue Pharma through the Justice Department for their participation in the opioid crisis. Sarsgaard is well-known for his work in films such as Jarhead (2005), Shattered Glass (2003), and Green Lantern as Hector Hammond, as well as TV shows such as The Killing (2013) and Wormwood.
3.’Randy Ramseyer’ is played by John Hoogenakker.
Randy Ramseyer, U.S. Attorney and Rick Mountcastle’s partner in unraveling the truth about OxyContin and Purdue Pharma’s web of falsehoods, all while managing his own personal issues, is played by John Hoogenakker.
Before Dopesick, Hoogenakker appeared in a variety of TV shows, including Castle Rock, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and Colony, as well as films such as Contagion.
5. Will Poulter in the role of ‘Billy Cutler’
Will Poulter plays Billy Cutler, a rookie and inexperienced Purdue Pharma pharmaceutical salesperson. Cutler has been assigned to market the brand-new OxyContin to Dr. Finnix, but he immediately becomes engulfed in the opiate pandemic. Poulter sprang to prominence in We’re the Millers as Kenny Rossmore, and he has since starred in the Maze Runner and Black Mirror series, as well as being cast as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
6.’Richard Sackler’ is played by Michael Stuhlbarg.
Michael Stuhlbarg plays Richard Sackler, the new patriarch of the famed Sackler family and the chairman and CEO of Purdue Pharma. Stuhlbarg has a long history as one of Hollywood’s most well-known character performers in both television and cinema.
Stuhlbarg has acted in films like A Serious Man, Call Me by Your Name, and The Shape of Water, as well as television shows including Boardwalk Empire, Fargo, and The Staircase.

7. ‘Betsy Mallum’ is played by Kaitlyn Dever.
Betsy Mallum, played by Kaitlyn Dever, is a tough young lady wanting to carry on her family’s mining tradition. Betsy becomes addicted to the OxyContin that was intended to give her her life back after an accident in the mines. Dever has previously played Eve Baxter on Last Man Standing, Amy on Booksmart, and Zoe Murphy on Dear Evan Hansen.
8. ‘Bridget Meyer’ is played by Rosario Dawson.
Bridget Meyer, played by Rosario Dawson, is a no-nonsense DEA agent who has taken up the battle against opioids and grudgingly assists Mountcastle and Ramseyer in taking on Purdue Pharma while going through a divorce.
Rosario Dawson has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including Daredevil, The Mandalorian, and Rent.
