California Man Severely Injured in Dog Attack, Arm Amputation Possible after Mauling

Victorville, CA– A man was transported to a trauma center with serious injuries after intervening in a dog fight in Victorville on Sunday, according to officials.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s and Fire Department logs report that an incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at a home in the 16500 block of Jasmine Street, east of Pismo Lane.

According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Mara Rodriguez, a man tried to intervene when he heard his dogs fighting in the backyard.

While attempting to separate the fighting animals, she reported one of them turned on him. Paramedics organized a helicopter transport to swiftly take the injured man to a trauma center.

First responders were alerted to be ready for a potential arm amputation as they made their way to the scene, though the full extent of the injuries remained unclear.

No information was provided regarding the victim’s condition.

Officials from Victorville Animal Services have taken two dogs into custody, identified as American XL Bullies, according to city spokeswoman Sue Jones.

The American Kennel Club characterized American XL Bully dogs as a taller version of the classic American Bully, measuring over 20 inches in height.

“XL Bully dogs share the same build, body type, and breed type as the Standard American Bully, and are expected to carry a heavily muscled, massive, bulky body type,” according to the organization.

The AKC website describes “The American Bully is a companion breed exhibiting confidence, a zest for life, along with an exuberant willingness to please and bond with their family, thus making the American Bully an excellent family companion.”

“Despite the American Bully’s fierce and powerful appearance their demeanor is gentle,” the organization added. “They are great with kids, and extremely friendly with strangers, other dogs, and other animals. Human or dog aggression, extreme shyness, or viciousness is very uncharacteristic of the American Bully and is highly undesirable.”
