San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria addressed public safety, infrastructure, housing affordability, and homelessness in his fourth State of the City Address.
Gloria, the 37th mayor of San Diego, spoke about the progress his administration has accomplished over the past year on stage at the Balboa Theatre on Wednesday at 6 p.m., despite criticism from former supporters that was severe.
Due to a sharp rise in overdose deaths, Gloria signed an executive order prioritizing enforcement against fentanyl trafficking and talked about efforts to revitalize the city’s civic core.
Some community people and organizations have criticized the Unsafe Camping Ordinance that the San Diego City Council approved, which forbids tent encampments in vulnerable places.
To expedite the approval process for projects involving 100% affordable housing, Gloria signed an executive order. The city also built “safe sleeping” places with facilities and services for the homeless. Gloria emphasized the possibilities for new housing through the reconstruction of the Sports Arena area, including plans for affordable dwellings, even though there is still a substantial housing gap in the area despite efforts.
Gloria’s address recounted his actions to save the city from the homelessness and opioid crisis. He also reflected on his thoughts about the sharp criticisms he faced for some of his actions and policies.
