A grand jury indicted on Wednesday a Venezuelan immigrant who is thought to have shot and killed two New York City police officers in Queens this month
Two counts of first- and second-degree attempted murder, two counts of attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, four counts of second-degree assault, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, reckless driving, driving a car the wrong way on a one-way road, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, and riding a motorcycle without license plates were among the 20 charges brought against 19-year-old Bernardo Raul Castro Mata.
Charges were brought against Mata on June 3 after NYPD officers tried to pull him over for going the wrong way on a one-way street. Mata is said to have shot two officers, hitting one in the chest and the other in the thigh.
Abreu is said to have followed Yarusso in an unmarked car while she ran after Mata. Condos came next, but Mata is said to have gotten off the motorbike and run away.
The prosecutor said that Mata took a gun from his cross-body bag during the fight and shot Yarusso in the lower chest at point-blank range. The officer’s bullet-resistant gear stopped the bullet, though.
The police officer then fired back, hitting Mata in the foot and ankle area. Mata is also said to have shot Abreu in the upper right thigh.
Mata dropped the gun after being shot and was locked up. Both cops were hurt and taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and then sent home.
According to Fox News, if he is found guilty, he could spend up to 40 years in prison.
