A tragic incident occurred when a 17-year-old lost their life in a crash shortly after the police, who were investigating a group of armed teens, ceased their pursuit of the vehicle the teenager was in.
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report on Sunday regarding a group of young males who were seen displaying firearms in the downtown area. During their journey, officers received information that the young individuals had placed the firearms inside a stationary vehicle.
Upon arrival, the officers initiated a pursuit on foot after the group of teenagers. A juvenile male was apprehended and subsequently released, while the remaining individuals in the group were not located.
Analysts at IMPD’s Real Time Crime Center observed an individual, who is prohibited from possessing firearms, entering the driver’s seat of a parked vehicle while carrying a gun. There were two additional juveniles in the car, one of them being 17-year-old Terryoun Mays.
After the car exited the downtown area, IMPD stated that officers tried to pull it over. After initially stopping and pulling over, the driver failed to comply with additional commands and eventually drove away, according to the police.
Officers kept tailing the car until it disappeared from their view and the chase was eventually called off. On Monday, IMPD reported that the officers pulled over and came to a complete stop on the side of the road.
Shortly after, IMPD reported that officers discovered the suspect vehicle had crashed and flipped over in the 2600 block of Brill Road. All three individuals, including Mays, were transported to a nearby hospital with severe injuries.
Earlier today, the Marion County Coroner sadly confirmed the passing of a 17-year-old passenger in the car due to his injuries. The individual in question has been identified as Mays as per Fox59 News.
IMPD promptly dispatched accident investigators to the scene of the crash for further investigation. According to reports, authorities discovered two firearms, a drum-style magazine, and multiple rounds inside the vehicle.
