Two individuals are being charged with multiple offenses in connection with the tragic passing of a baby in Blount County.
At approximately 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Mason Grimes, 36, and Brooklyn Paige Posey Grimes, 31, both residents of Horton, were taken into custody and booked into the Blount County Jail, as reported by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.
The duo faces charges of capital murder of a child under the age of 15, felony murder, and aggravated child abuse.
According to court documents filed on Wednesday evening, Mason Grimes has been identified as the child’s foster father.
According to the documents, on Aug. 5, 2022, the child, who was 3 months old at the time, was placed into Grimes custody and thrived for approximately a year.
Later, on September 25, 2023, the child received a diagnosis of “multiple congenital disorders” at Children’s of Alabama. A follow-up appointment was then scheduled for October 20. Unfortunately, Grimes declined to take the child back and the hospital’s attempts to reach out went unanswered.
After a month, the child was brought to St. Vincent’s in Blount County due to a cessation of breathing. Upon arrival, medical staff discovered that they were in a critical condition, showing signs of extreme malnutrition, absence of cardiac activity, and low body temperature.
According to reports, the child’s weight had significantly decreased since their appointment at Children’s in September, and there is no record of them receiving any additional medical care.
