Miami, FL: A woman is now facing serious charges of animal cruelty after allegedly inflicting multiple cuts on her dog Sparky’s neck. The police report states that she claimed to have had a dream that compelled her to make a sacrifice.
Following a thorough two-month investigation, authorities apprehended Elena Barakova Cowan, 37, of Edgewater on Friday. As per an arrest report, Cowan brought the dog to a veterinarian to address its injuries on Nov. 14, leading to the involvement of Miami police shortly after.

After being arrested, Cowan informed the officer that she had been sleep-deprived for about four days. She claimed to have had a dream that compelled her to make a sacrifice to save humanity. As a result, she woke up, went to the kitchen, took a knife, and proceeded to harm the dog by cutting its neck multiple times, as stated in the arrest report.
According to reports, Cowan informed the officer about Sparky’s injuries, mentioning both superficial cuts and deeper ones that overlapped. The dog managed to survive the attack and was later taken in by Miami-Dade Animal Services for adoption.
Cowan, a Bulgarian citizen, was no longer found in Miami-Dade jail records as of Monday morning.
