Virginia Man Attacked Ex-Partner and Left Their Baby in Snow; Arrested 900 Miles Away in Florida

Honk News (Miami, FL) – A man from Virginia was taken into custody in a different state earlier this week following accusations of assaulting and strangling the mother of his child. He reportedly left their newborn baby in the snow before escaping to Florida.

A 20-year-old named Darvin Flores Caballeros was apprehended in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on Thursday, February 20, during a “felony stop.” He is confronted with allegations including malicious wounding, strangulation, two instances of child endangerment, assault and battery against a family member, petit larceny, and an emergency protective order, as stated in a release from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO).

The agency that provided the details on X reported that the individual in question had “active warrants” issued by the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia related to an alleged domestic assault on February 12. During this incident, he was accused of attacking the mother of his child and leaving behind his 13-day-old infant.

According to the office’s investigation, Caballeros faces allegations of dropping his child and assaulting and strangling the mother of the baby during a confrontation. He reportedly ran away from the location on foot with the infant.

A compassionate individual later found the infant buried in a mound of snow, while the injured party was receiving treatment for significant wounds following the incident, as reported by the WCSO.

A photo released by the office depicts Caballeros lying on the ground, encircled by officials near a stationary vehicle, while the driver raises their hands in surrender.

On February 20, the individual was transported to Walton County Jail and is currently pending extradition. Inmate details from the Walton County Jail’s website reveal that Caballeros made his first court appearance virtually on Feb. 21, facing charges as a “out-of-state fugitive.”

As of February 22, there is no bond information available for Caballeros, who continues to be held in custody at the jail. His legal representation status remains uncertain. The WCSO has yet to provide additional details to PEOPLE regarding the situation as of February 22.

According to officials, the charges against Caballeros are based on Virginia State Statute, indicating that the phrasing may differ from the charges he would have faced in Florida, where he was taken into custody. According to the WCSO, the allegations continue to indicate severe offenses including aggravated battery, aggravated child abuse, and false imprisonment.

Santa Rosa Beach, Florida — the location where the individual was apprehended — is situated more than 900 miles south of Fairfax County, Virginia.
