Honk News – (Memphis, TN) – A 19-year-old individual in Tennessee faces allegations of taking a 7-year-old girl from her bedroom and fleeing with her, later reappearing at the victim’s residence weeks after the child successfully resisted the first attempt at abduction.
Last week, Jeremiah Smith was arrested and faces a charge of especially aggravated kidnapping, according to court documents.
At approximately 4:05 a.m. on November 6, officers from the Memphis Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex located in the 3200 block of Johnson Avenue in response to a report of a child being taken. When they arrived, first responders spoke with the victim’s mother, who reported that her 7-year-old daughter had just entered her room saying “someone took her from her bed” and took her outside. In a fortunate turn of events, the child successfully evaded her potential abductor and returned home safely.
The victim recounted the traumatic experience to the officers, sharing the details with great distress.

Authorities have secured video evidence that supports the victim’s version of events regarding the incident. The investigation revealed that the unidentified individual was dressed in a brown hoodie and black pants during the attempted abduction of the child.
On November 24, the mother of the victim contacted law enforcement for the second occasion, indicating that the alleged abductor was present outside her residence around 5:40 AM that day. A surveillance camera recorded the suspect returning to the same location, wearing the same outfit, where he reportedly took the 7-year-old before a vigilant neighbor stepped in.
The neighbor, Juan Cathey, reported to the police that he initially noticed the suspect near the rear door of the location where the kidnapping took place on November 6. Upon spotting the individual, Cathey stepped outside to challenge him regarding his activities on the premises. The individual first asserted that his aunt resided adjacent to Cathey.

Cathey also mentioned that he attempted to talk to the suspect in order to draw him nearer to the security cameras, positioning himself about five or six feet away to get a clear view of the suspect’s face. Cathey successfully identified Smith in a six-person lineup as the individual present at the victim’s residence on November 24.
Records indicate that Smith is presently detained in the Shelby County Jail with a bond set at $150,000. He is set to appear in court for his preliminary hearing on January 15.
