Tragedy struck in north Houston on Wednesday night, as both a teen and a child lost their lives in a matter of minutes, according to police reports.
It all occurred when a group of children were allegedly playing with a firearm around 8:20 p.m.
Authorities reported that the 11-year-old boy was declared deceased at the location. A tragic incident occurred where a 17-year-old individual, who had brought a gun to a residence, unfortunately, passed away at the hospital after self-inflicting a gunshot wound, as reported by HPD.
According to the police, the child’s relatives had gathered at an apartment complex located at 6869 Arto Street near Hardy Street.
According to HPD, it seems that the gun was brought by the 17-year-old, who was probably displaying it.
As per the authorities, the gun was placed on a bed by the 17-year-old. Later, a 14-year-old girl unknowingly picked it up and pulled the trigger, believing it was empty. Tragically, the 11-year-old boy lost his life due to a gunshot wound.
According to investigators, the 17-year-old quickly seized the weapon and fled to a nearby railroad. According to reports, his family members attempted to have a conversation with him due to his emotional state.
Authorities reported that the teenager discharged a small number of rounds. An apartment complex was struck, fortunately without any injuries. Afterwards, he tragically took his own life.
The police have confirmed that the 14-year-old girl is safe and unharmed.
The investigation still has numerous lingering questions, particularly regarding the firearm.
“As far as the weapon, we are not sure if the weapon was inside the home or if the individual was carrying the weapon himself. Again, we’re investigating that portion,” Asst. Chief Keith Seafous said.
Gun owners need to remember to securely store and lock up their weapons to prevent access by children.
