New York City- A young boy was injured by gunfire in the Bronx just a day shy of turning 12, according to authorities, amid a troubling surge of violence among the youth in the city.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, a shooting occurred at the intersection of East 188 and Park Avenue.
A young boy sustained a leg injury and was transported by emergency medical services to Jacobi Hospital, where authorities anticipate a full recovery as reported by The New York Police Department.
Investigators were present in the Fordham area of the Bronx gathering evidence late Saturday, yet no arrests have occurred and authorities have not provided further information.
The recent incident marks another episode of youth-related violence across the five boroughs.
In the latest fiscal year, which concluded in June, there has been a notable increase of 14% in offenses targeting individuals aged 17 and younger, as highlighted in the Mayor’s Management Report.
In the midst of the turmoil, students throughout the city expressed a sense of insecurity in and around their schools, gripped by fear of gang-related violence, according to a recent survey of K-12 learners.
This spring, a survey conducted by the city Department of Education revealed that 27% of the 355 pupils polled reported that gang activity was present some or most of the time in school, marking a 2% increase from the previous year.
