Honk News – Aggressive Rottweilers roaming freely in the unincorporated area of Johnstons River, P.E.I., have left residents fearing for their safety after a string of attacks on people and pets.
The incidents have led to injuries requiring medical attention, stitches, and traumatized animals. Residents are calling for urgent action to remove the dogs from the neighborhood to prevent further harm.
Recent Attacks Spark Alarm
The most recent attack occurred on Christmas Eve, when Hunter Hamilton was walking his dog, Jasper. Two Rottweilers attacked them, resulting in injuries to both.
- Hunter Hamilton: Suffered a bite on his lower arm and needed five stitches.
- Jasper (Hamilton’s Dog): Received nine stitches for wounds on his face and back.
Hamilton described the attack as sudden and terrifying. He managed to fend off the dogs using a log from a nearby woodpile until someone called the dogs away.
“At the time, I didn’t feel the bite. It wasn’t until I got home and saw the blood on my coat that I realized the extent of my injuries,” Hamilton said.

Community Concerns
Other residents, like neighbor Miles Welsh, have also had alarming encounters with the dogs. Welsh recounted two incidents where the Rottweilers attacked his dog, Max.
In one instance, the dogs grabbed Max by the neck and shook him violently. Both times, the dogs remained on his property until the owner eventually called them back.
“It’s not safe, and somebody’s going to get seriously hurt,” Welsh warned.
Owner’s History of Infractions
The Rottweilers belong to Ties Hakkers, who has been cited for at least three infractions related to allowing dogs to roam at large:
Date | Infraction |
---|---|
January 2024 | Incident involving Hunter Hamilton |
September 2024 | Two additional infractions for roaming |
Despite these violations, residents feel that authorities are not taking the situation seriously enough.

Calls for Action
Both Hamilton’s family and Welsh have reported the incidents to the RCMP and the P.E.I. Humane Society. However, the dogs remain in the area, and residents feel their concerns are being ignored.
“The dogs have more rights than us people,” Welsh said. “It’s not right.”
Community Safety at Risk
Residents of Johnstons River are demanding decisive action to ensure the safety of their community. Many believe the aggressive dogs should be removed to prevent further incidents.
As the situation continues to unfold, the community hopes for stronger enforcement of laws to address the dangers posed by roaming dogs.
