Early life And Education
The son of Sarah Bryna (Webber) and Harry Kraft, a clothing manufacturer in Boston’s Chinatown, Kraft was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. His mother was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and his father, a lay leader at Brookline’s Congregation Kehillath Israel, wished for his son to become a rabbi. The Krafts were a Jewish family that practiced Modern Orthodox Judaism. Robert graduated from Brookline High School after attending the Edward Devotion School.
He used to sell newspapers outside of Braves Field in Boston when he was a kid. He was unable to engage in most sports during high school because it interfered with his after-school Hebrew studies and Sabbath devotion.
Kraft was a class president at Columbia University, where he received an academic scholarship. He was a member of the freshmen and lightweight football teams, where he played tennis and safety.
