A Maryland man has been convicted for the murder of his girlfriend and her unborn child, marking a historic moment in Montgomery County as the first conviction for the killing of a viable unborn baby.
A jury on Friday found Torrey Moore, 33, guilty on two counts of first-degree murder in the tragic case involving his pregnant girlfriend, Denise Middleton, and her unborn child.
Moore faced convictions for multiple serious offenses, including two counts related to the use of a handgun during a felony, one count for committing a violent crime against a pregnant individual, and one count for illegal firearm possession, according to reports.
Prosecutors presented surveillance footage capturing the final moments of Middleton, who was eight and a half months pregnant, as reported by Fox 5 DC. Footage captured on October 9, 2022, from an elevator in Moore’s residence shows the couple together just before her passing.
Authorities suspect that Moore fired seven shots at Middleton, aged 26, shortly thereafter. The discovery of Middleton’s remains in Moore’s apartment revealed significant decomposition.
Moore is confronted with the prospect of a life sentence without the chance for parole, as his sentencing hearing is set for March 28.
