A Zebulon couple is facing child abuse charges following the discovery of their 4-month-old baby with 10 broken ribs.
Christopher Chambers and Teyah Brown, both 24, of Royal Deeside Court in Zebulon are being charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. Their 4-month-old suffered fractures of 10 ribs and had bruising under the skin.
“It’s just so horrific,” expressed Alison Feigh, the Director of the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center, a program under the Zero Abuse Project.
Alison Feigh is involved with the Zero Abuse Project, an organization dedicated to offering resources to help prevent, identify, and address child abuse.
“This kind of abuse happens behind closed doors so it’s not often seen by the community,” Alison Feigh, Zero Abuse Project
WRAL News visited the residence listed as the mother’s address, but no one responded at the door.
Feigh also emphasized the significance of intervention and pointed out the indicators that neighbors should be aware of.
“If you’re hearing things that make you worry for a baby’s safety, remember that the baby can’t call a child abuse hotline,” she said.
The injuries to the child occurred in May, as stated in the warrant for their arrests.
“If you’re seeing parents who are appearing to be short-tempered and frustrated to point you’re worried about the child’s safety, we need to reach out for help on behalf of child’s family,” Feigh said.
Both individuals were apprehended on Thursday and were each granted a bond of $500,000.
The Police Chief, Boykin, has confirmed that the baby is currently under the care of Child Protective Services and is displaying positive signs of progress.
