A woman has been charged with murder after allegedly causing severe harm to her girlfriend’s 4-month-old child. Originally charged with child abuse, the 31-year-old now faces additional charges following the child’s removal from life support.
Renzi McCall, a mere 4 months old, was brought to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital on July 21 with a multitude of apparent injuries.
Tragically, on July 25, the young girl was removed from life support, devastating her family and community.
The incident took place at the apartment on West Franklin that Miller and her girlfriend share.
Miller observed Renzi as her biological mother carried out her duties. The mother of the baby left at approximately 1:40 a.m. and promptly attempted to contact Miller.
She remained silent. She sent her a message. Court documents obtained by FOX 17 reveal that none of her text messages received a response.
The mother of the baby and a colleague arrived at the apartment but were unable to gain access.
Finally, the duo managed to catch a glimpse through a bedroom window where they claimed to have spotted Miller fast asleep.
Miller eventually woke up and allowed them to enter after some commotion at the window.
“Both females walked into the room and observed the baby in a Pack ‘n Play. The baby was laying on her back, face up, on the top of a blanket. The baby had bruises all over her body. Most notably, a very severe injury to her right eye, orbital, and bruises to her stomach, and bruises to her hip,” court documents explain. “The baby was unresponsive at that time, so Amber McCall’s co-worker felt the baby’s stomach. The baby wasn’t breathing at that point, but two seconds later the baby started to breathe.”
911 was promptly contacted, and Renzi was swiftly transported to the hospital. Miller has been apprehended for child abuse and is currently in police custody.
Miller stated that the injuries occurred due to a sequence of unfortunate incidents, such as falling from her bed and falling from a kitchen counter.
Additionally, she stated that she unintentionally bumped the baby’s head against a sharp edge as she was leaving the kitchen.
The documents state that she acknowledges being responsible for the baby’s welfare during that period. She described the entire night as a bit hazy.
She is currently facing a total of four charges, including child abuse in the first and second degree, felony murder, and second-degree murder.
After being initially granted a $150,000 bond for the child abuse charge, it has now been revoked.
She will continue to be held in custody for the foreseeable future as reported by Fox-17 News.
