Nurse Sentenced for Slapping Newborn Premature Baby in New York; Parents Captured Incident in Surveillance Camera

A night nurse from Brooklyn has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after being caught on camera slapping and shaking a premature newborn in a Westchester County home last year, according to prosecutors.

Gwendolyn Blake received a three-year probation and faced limitations in her nursing career after causing harm to a 5-week-old boy. The victim’s parents expressed concerns about her violent behavior and the potential risk she posed to other families.

According to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, Blake, 40, was responsible for looking after the newborn of the Town of Mamaroneck’s family on Aug. 30, 2023. However, during this time, she accidentally struck the baby while he was crying.

The disturbing violence continued the next day as the heartless nurse repeatedly struck the child’s face, forcefully grabbed his head, and shook him, according to prosecutors.

Both disturbing incidents were caught on surveillance footage.

Blake was taken into custody on September 5, 2023, and later admitted to two misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child in May.

The defendant received a 30-day jail sentence, which was less than the 60 days requested by prosecutors, according to the district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors have stated that as part of Blake’s probation, he is prohibited from providing care to the elderly, young children, or any other vulnerable populations.

A permanent order of protection has been granted in the case, ensuring that Blake will be kept away from the victim and his family.

Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah strongly criticized Blake for disregarding her professional and moral obligations.
