Mother Sentenced to Over a Year in Prison for Assaulting Pregnant Nurse During Child’s Hospital Visit in Georgia

A woman from Georgia allegedly assaulted multiple nurses, including one who was pregnant, at a U.S. Army hospital while her child was receiving treatment, according to federal prosecutors.

According to prosecutors and court documents, she has been sentenced to prison for her violent incident at the Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart on June 27, 2022. The Army post is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

According to prosecutors, after the woman took her child to the hospital for treatment, she insisted that the medical staff carry out certain procedures on her daughter. These procedures were not only more risky, but also not recommended or considered part of the standard of care. Officials pointed out that the mother did not have any professional medical training.

As medical personnel attended to her daughter, the woman took it upon herself to detach the child from the hospital equipment and forcefully remove her from the facility, as stated by prosecutors.

According to prosecutors, she allegedly engaged in physical altercations with staff members, including pushing a pregnant nurse and forcefully pushing another nurse into a wall.

According to prosecutors, she was using strong language and raising her voice at them.

Military police swiftly intervened and safely removed the child from the woman’s vehicle, as reported by prosecutors. They ensured that the girl received the necessary medical attention by promptly returning her to the hospital.

A woman from Liberty County, aged 35, has been sentenced to one year and four months in prison. She was convicted of obstructing and hindering emergency professionals, as well as misdemeanor counts of simple battery and disorderly conduct.

This information was released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia on September 4.

The defense attorney, Katie A. Brewington, did not respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on September 4. Brewington intends to challenge the woman’s sentence, as stated in a notice she submitted on September 4th.

According to prosecutors, the woman has been banned from the facility due to the altercation.

Officials have stated that she is required to report to a Bureau of Prisons facility by Sept. 23 in order to commence serving her sentence.
