Man Arrested for Alleged Involvement in Shooting Death of 15-year-old in Wisconsin

The Madison Police Department said on Tuesday that a man who is suspected of killing a 15-year-old girl outside of an east-side apartment building last year has been taken into custody.

Kyesha Miller, 15, died, and Madison police say they had been sorting through evidence for the past nine months.

“We had to recover the vehicle that we knew was used in this particular crime, MPD Police Chief Shon Barnes said. “We did that. We had to process that vehicle for DNA evidence, hair, whatever it may be that could connect us to who was driving.”

According to the MPD, a suspect, age 21, was taken into custody on Sunday in relation to the fatal shooting that occurred on October 10, 2023, outside the Harmony Apartments located in the 5900 block of Milwaukee Street. Three other teenagers, including Miller’s sister, were injured in addition to Miller’s death.

Miller’s mother Karnika Miller stated in November 2023, “She was just going outside to have some fun and was gunned down.” “And those who carried out this are still at large, free.”

Four persons were spotted sprinting toward a silver SUV, which MPD previously made public. Investigators think the SUV is probably a Lexus. When the SUV was found, police in November confirmed that it was stolen, along with its license plate.

Drug and firearms accusations led the Dane County Sheriff’s Office to detain the suspect. Tuesday, the MPD forwarded more homicide charges following the determination of probable cause.

Chief Barnes remarked, “I don’t understand his role. “It wasn’t to stop it, whatever it was. It didn’t serve as a mediator or an interrupter. He wasn’t supposed to intervene and be the voice of reason, which is what we actually needed, or to halt whatever was happening.

In March, a throng assembled in front of the Dane County Courthouse, demanding justice and the apprehension of those responsible for Miller’s demise. In April, police stated that although they had sufficient evidence to make an arrest, they still needed to make sure the case was strong enough for a trial.

According to MPD, there could be more arrests in this instance. The department’s CCTV video showed at least four more people as reported by a local news outlet.

“The work is not done. And when it is, we will have a press conference to let you know that these people who are responsible for this heinous act that really, really shook up a community and still continues to and effect the family forever, have been brought to justice,” Chief Barnes said.
According to MPD, more details will be disclosed by police during a news conference on Wednesday.
