Illinois Mother in Custody after 2-year-old Died from Overdose; Toddler went Limp and Mother Sought Help after 4 Hours

A mug shot has been made public of a woman from Homer Glen who was arrested in relation to the suspected overdose death of her 2-year-old daughter.

Alexa Balen, 27, is facing serious felony charges, which include endangering a child’s life or health and two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Edward Weiher, 49, the girl’s father, faces charges and is currently in custody.

Prosecutors disclosed unsettling information regarding the circumstances of Trinity Balen-Weiher’s death earlier this month. They recounted the moment the child’s body went limp and how she was left unattended for four hours before her parents finally dialed 911.

Officials reported that after failing to revive Trinity, the couple requested an Uber to bring Narcan.

Balen and Weiher acknowledged their drug use, and their residence was discovered in a shocking state, cluttered with drugs, waste, and insects. Prosecutors revealed that Balen’s 7-year-old daughter had positive tests for fentanyl and cocaine.

A 7-year-old girl is now under the care of the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS).

Balen, following her hospitalization due to the girl’s death, has been transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility after her release. Her upcoming court appearance is set for December 3.
