Florida Boy Stopped His Bike to Pet Dogs on Street; Died after Vicious Pitbull Attack

Honk News (Volusia County, FL) – An 8-year-old boy, Michael Millett, was fatally mauled by two dogs on Monday, January 13, in a devastating attack near the entrance of his subdivision north of DeLand, Florida, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

The tragedy unfolded as Michael and a friend went for a bike ride in the neighborhood. When Michael approached the dogs to pet them, they attacked, Sheriff Mike Chitwood said during a press conference on Tuesday.

“At that point, Michael is maliciously mauled, brutally mauled, and killed at the scene,” Chitwood stated. One of the dogs involved, a 70-pound pit bull, was described as particularly aggressive.

Sheriff Chitwood revealed that the dogs have a troubling history within the community. They were allegedly known for killing chickens and roaming freely, causing repeated disturbances.

“Clearly, this didn’t just happen in a vacuum; these dogs have been terrorizing the neighborhood for a while,” Chitwood said. Authorities are investigating whether the dogs may have been involved in other incidents in nearby counties.

The dogs are currently in quarantine under the custody of Volusia County Animal Services. Authorities have not disclosed whether charges will be filed against the dogs’ owner.
