A recall has been issued for bags of dog treats across 19 states.

The Food and Drug Administration revealed that Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. from Lenoir, North Carolina, is recalling 400 bags of “Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips” dog treats due to potential Salmonella contamination.

The products were available at Hollywood Feed locations across several states, including

  • Alabama,
  • Arkansas,
  • Florida,
  • Georgia,
  • Illinois,
  • Indiana,
  • Kansas,
  • Kentucky,
  • Louisiana,
  • Michigan,
  • Mississippi,
  • Missouri,
  • North Carolina,
  • Ohio,

The snacks come in a 16-ounce bag featuring a striking purple and black design. The reverse side of the bags features a lot number of 20051324L2 along with an expiration date of 11/13/25. The FDA has indicated that this is the sole lot number that could potentially be contaminated. So far, there have been no reports of any illnesses.

A contamination issue was detected following tests conducted by an external laboratory on an unreleased batch of the same product, according to the agency’s report.

Consumers of these dog treats are advised to discontinue their use immediately. For inquiries regarding refunds or replacement products, individuals can reach out to the company through email at [email protected] or by calling 828-394-6460 during business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday (ET).

The FDA has indicated that both animals and humans are at risk of contracting salmonella. Animals can get it from consuming contaminated products, while humans may become infected through handling these products, particularly if they neglect to wash their hands or clean any surfaces that have come into contact with them.

Symptoms

Animals affected by Salmonella may exhibit signs of lethargy, along with symptoms such as diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Certain pets may experience a reduced appetite, fever, and abdominal discomfort. Pets that are infected can transmit the illness to other animals or humans. If your pet is exhibiting these signs or has consumed the recalled item, reach out to your veterinarian.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of Salmonella may encounter nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. The condition may occasionally lead to more severe health issues, such as infections in the arteries, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle discomfort, eye irritation, and symptoms related to the urinary tract. Individuals showing these signs are advised to reach out to their medical professional.
