Jacksonville, NC- A heartbreaking incident occurred on November 29 when an 8-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being attacked by his family’s dog. The attack took place as the boy and his sibling were letting their two dogs outside their home in Jacksonville, NC, the day after Thanksgiving.
First responders arrived on the scene and discovered the child with severe bite injuries on his neck, according to a December 2 release from the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency medical teams provided immediate treatment before rushing the boy to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The family described the dogs, which are Pitbulls and Great Dane mixes, as having no history of aggression.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy for the family and our community,” said Onslow County Sheriff Chris Thomas. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
Authorities also confirmed that animal control and law enforcement had received no prior reports involving the dogs. Both animals have since been quarantined by Onslow County Animal Control, as noted by the Sheriff’s Office.
Jacksonville, located near North Carolina’s coast, is approximately 55 miles northeast of Wilmington. This tragic event has left the local community in shock and mourning.
