Spike does not die in the first season of ‘Cowboy Bebop.’ Spike, Jet, and Faye save Jet’s daughter Kimmie from Vicious and his gang in the season finale, but Spike immediately returns to the figurative snake pit, aiming for one more showdown with his former buddy turned bitter adversary. He assassinates two of Vicious’ most faithful lieutenants, Shin and Lin, before confronting Vicious himself.
Their battle takes place within a church, with Spike equipped with a rifle and Vicious armed with a katana. Vicious eventually gets the pistol and is ready to shoot Spike when Julia comes and shoots him instead.

It has been years since they had seen one other. Unfortunately, Spike’s hopes for an emotional reunion with the woman he loves are quickly dashed. Julia questions why he never came for her and left her to languish in her awful existence with Vicious. When she discovers that he didn’t because he believed she picked Vicious above him, she is astounded and wonders how he could believe such a thing.
Spike gradually realizes that Julia’s existence with Vicious has altered her. She is not the lady he abandoned. Julia’s new persona is cutthroat, realistic, and survivalist. She would go to any length to avoid being as terrified as she was during her time with Vicious. She invites Spike to join her in claiming the Syndicate crown, but he declines. Before killing him, Julia refers to their time together as a dream.

However, like Julia, Spike is a survivor. Neither the gunshot nor the subsequent several hundred-meter fall kills him. He returns to the Bebop, but there seemed to be nothing left for him there. Faye has already departed to look for her mother, and Jet informs him that the only reason he is still alive is because he assisted in Kimmie’s rescue. Spike’s companion of the previous few years has warned him that the next time he sees him, he will murder him.
Spike is still alive at the end of the first season, although he has lost almost everything. In the final moments, however, a glimmer of hope appears in the form of Radical Ed, who informs Spike that she has a job for him.
