Two members of the Kansas City Chiefs have been charged with possession of marijuana.
Two football players, Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Jason Godrick, were recently arrested in Johnson County, Kansas. They have been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, as per the records of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Morris and Godrick, both 23, were taken into custody and later released on Friday after posting bond, according to records. The court appearance is scheduled for May 23.
Morris and Godrick are both entering their second season with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Morris became a member of the Chiefs during the 2023 NFL Draft. According to his official Chiefs bio, the former Oklahoma offensive tackle was selected by the Chiefs as their third-round draft pick, coming in at 92nd overall.
The Chiefs also added Godrick to their team in 2023. According to his bio, he became a part of the team as their designated international pathway player and spent his initial season on the practice squad.
In recent weeks, a Chiefs player, Harrison Butker, gained attention for a speech he delivered at Benedictine College’s graduation ceremony that sparked controversy.
The Chiefs kicker’s controversial speech at the Kansas Catholic school on May 11 has sparked intense backlash due to his remarks targeting working women, the LBGTQ+ community, abortion rights, and families who choose surrogacy and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The NFL responded on May 15, clarifying that the kicker’s opinions do not align with the organization’s stance.
Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, stated that Harrison Butker delivered a speech in his personal capacity, according to PEOPLE.
“The statement clarified that his views do not align with the NFL as a whole,” the organization stated. “The NFL remains dedicated to promoting inclusion, as it strengthens our league.”
