Colombian Woman Faces Charges for 20 Years of Identity Theft and Illegal Voting

Lina Maria Orovio-Hernandez, 59, living illegally in the U.S., is accused of using a stolen identity for over two decades to collect more than $400,000 in federal benefits and illegally voting in the 2024 presidential election, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.

Fraudulent Activities and Voting Allegations

Orovio-Hernandez allegedly submitted a fraudulent voter registration in January 2023 and was caught on surveillance wearing an “I voted” sticker on Election Day, November 5, 2024.

  • Used a stolen Social Security number for welfare and Social Security disability benefits
  • Obtained a REAL ID and eight other state IDs under the false identity
  • Illegally received $259,589 in Section 8 rental assistance, $101,257 in Social Security disability benefits, and $43,348 in SNAP benefits

She faces multiple charges, including identity theft, false statements on passport applications, and fraudulent voting. Orovio-Hernandez has been in federal custody since February.
