According to the attorney general, a new gun regulation has prevented young people from purchasing over 500 firearms.

In a significant development for gun control in the United States, Attorney General Merrick Garland recently announced that over 500 gun purchases have been blocked due to a new gun law that came into effect in 2022. This law, which is one of the most sweeping pieces of gun legislation in recent decades, specifically targets young buyers, imposing stricter background checks for those under 21 years of age.

Background and Impetus for the Law

The enactment of this law was in response to a spate of mass shootings that shocked the nation, including a horrific incident at a Texas elementary school that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.

The bipartisan law, which represents a significant compromise, also includes provisions to keep firearms away from more domestic violence offenders and to support states in implementing red flag laws. These laws aim to facilitate the removal of weapons from individuals deemed dangerous.

Details of the Law and Its Effects

Under the new law, additional checks are mandated, involving state and local officials alongside the standard FBI database searches conducted before approving a gun purchase. These enhanced measures have successfully blocked 527 gun sales so far. Among those denied purchase were individuals with concerning backgrounds, including a convicted rapist, a suspect in an attempted murder case, and a person previously involuntarily committed for mental health treatment.
