Indiana Parents Arrested for Allegedly Refusing to Pick Up 13-Year-Old Daughter from Hospital

Honk News (Indianapolis, IN) – An Indiana couple, a 36-year-old mother and her 41-year-old husband, has been taken into custody for reportedly declining to retrieve their 13-year-old daughter from the hospital. The mother allegedly expressed to a social worker that she was “not dealing with this s—.”

Amanda D. Osmon, the mother of the child, along with her stepfather Jeffrey Scheda, were arrested over the weekend and face charges of neglect of a dependent, according to court records.

On Saturday, an event occurred at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Hospital, located approximately 165 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

A report indicates that the teenager made her way to the hospital independently in the afternoon and was admitted for a mental health evaluation following a dispute with Osmon. After the assessment, the hospital social worker tried multiple times to reach Osmon, but none of the attempts were successful.

At approximately 7 p.m., the social worker reached out to Scheda via phone. When the social worker requested that Scheda have Osmon contact the hospital, he allegedly disconnected the call.

After several hours at the hospital, the social worker finally managed to reach Osmon around 10 pm. The social worker characterized the discussion with authorities as “agitated,” ultimately escalating into a dispute over who would be arriving at the hospital to retrieve the child.

The dialogue allegedly concluded with Osmon stating, “I’m not dealing with this s— tonight,” before abruptly disconnecting from the social worker, who informed authorities that Osmon appeared to be intoxicated.

In the early hours of Sunday, officers from the Evansville Police Department visited the parents’ residence and engaged with the defendants. Authorities have indicated that both individuals acknowledged consuming alcohol and losing consciousness while the minor was receiving medical care.

Osmon allegedly informed authorities that the teenager had bitten her during a dispute earlier that day and subsequently asserted that the hospital had not reached out to her about the teen’s discharge until 2:52 a.m. on Sunday; however, she could not furnish any evidence to support this assertion.

The parents were apprehended and booked at the Vanderburgh County Jail. They secured their release by posting a bond of $1,500 each. Osmon and Scheda are not allowed to consume alcohol or have any contact with the victim unless they receive permission from the Department of Child Services as part of their release conditions.

Osmon and Scheda are set to appear in court for their initial hearings on January 29.
