Man Held Nurse on His Property after Posting Job on Craigslist; Arrested after Victim made Distress Call in West Virginia

Honk News (Gilmer County, WV) – A man from Gilmer County is accused of hiring a nursing assistant from Florida and then making her feel unsafe in a building on his property that lacked running water.

On November 11, officers from the Gilmer County detachment of the West Virginia State Police were informed about a situation involving a female victim who felt unsafe leaving a residence due to threats and pressure, as stated in a criminal complaint.

Troopers and Glenville Police officers responded to a home where a woman claimed 54-year-old Michael Florence was holding her from Glenville, who had already departed the area, according to the troopers.

Troopers talked to the female victim and found out that she is a certified nurse assistant from Florida. She had been contacted by Florence because of a home health care ad she posted on Craigslist, as stated in the complaint.

The victim stated that she was assured accommodation and payment for her work, but she never received any compensation for the two weeks she worked for Florence. She also mentioned that she was supposed to stay in a small building on Florence’s property, which was promised to her as her accommodation, according to the troopers.

The victim pointed out that the building lacked running water and a bathroom, leading to the necessity of using a bucket for toileting needs. She mentioned feeling “put in fear for her safety” due to Florence throwing rocks at the building and making threats, according to the complaint.

The victim informed troopers that she had been picked up in Sutton by Florence after arriving on a bus from Florida to start her job. She mentioned that she did not have cell phone service and was unaware of her location in West Virginia, according to the troopers.

The victim at the Glenville residence felt scared to leave, fearing that Florence might harm her on several occasions, as stated in the complaint.

Florence faces charges of human trafficking and assault against a healthcare provider. He is currently in Central Regional Jail with a bond set at $201,800.
