Honk News (Cornelius, NC) – A young man, aged 18, is confronting several charges related to the exploitation of a minor, as reported by the Cornelius Police Department.
Authorities reported receiving information regarding Brett Gerald Kimbrell’s alleged possession of illicit material involving minors. Authorities subsequently reached out to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force to launch an inquiry.
A search warrant was carried out at Kimbrell’s home on Friday, leading to the seizure of electronic devices for additional forensic examination.
Kimbrell faced ten charges related to felony second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
The Cornelius Police Department reports that a magistrate from Mecklenburg County has decided to release Kimbrell into his parents’ custody rather than granting him a bond.

The department issued a statement about that decision, stating:
“Given the serious nature of these charges, which involve the safety and well-being of children, we find this decision troubling and concerning. The release of this defendant, especially under such circumstances, undermines the gravity of the situation and raises significant concerns about the risk to public safety, particularly the safety of minors in the community.
The Cornelius Police Department strongly believes that individuals charged with such serious offenses should be held in custody, pending further legal proceedings, to ensure a definitive message that crimes involving the exploitation and violence against children will not be taken lightly.”
