In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old woman in Florida has been taken into custody after reportedly giving birth in her college dorm bathroom, subsequently taking the life of the newborn and disposing of the body in a trash can.
Brianna Moore faces serious charges, including aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect resulting in great bodily harm, as stated by the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office. On April 27, Moore’s roommates at McKay Hall, University of Tampa, alerted authorities after hearing a baby crying and noticing blood on the bathroom floor. Paramedics assessed Moore, who refuted any pregnancy claims and attributed the blood to her menstrual cycle.
The following day, the roommates discovered a bloody towel in Moore’s trash can and promptly contacted the authorities once more. Officers arrived on the scene and discovered the deceased infant after unwrapping the towel.
Prosecutors stated that during the interview with Moore, she confessed to giving birth in the bathroom and cradling the baby closely until the infant ceased crying.
Moore subsequently admitted to placing the girl in the garbage. An arrest report acquired by the Tampa Bay Times revealed that she informed the police, after being read her rights, that she believed the baby was deceased.
It has been reported that she took a shower, cleaned the girl with water, and then placed her on the bedroom floor before dozing off for approximately an hour. Upon waking, the girl remained unresponsive, leading her to wrap the newborn in a towel, according to the affidavit. Authorities suspect she may have been unaware of her pregnancy.
An autopsy revealed that her cause of death was asphyxia resulting from compression of the torso. She suffered multiple fractured ribs along with lung hemorrhaging. The cause of death has been determined to be homicide.
Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, law enforcement apprehended the suspect in her home state of Mississippi. She is currently waiting to be sent back to Florida. She is currently dealing with allegations related to the improper handling, preservation, or transportation of human remains, as well as neglecting to inform the medical examiner or law enforcement about a death.
Florida, like several other states, has implemented a law that permits individuals to leave unwanted newborns at designated locations such as fire stations or hospitals within 30 days, without any inquiries made. Lopez remarked that it would have been easy for Moore to accomplish that.
