Missouri Man Charged with Kidnapping, Domestic Assault; Locked Himself and Baby in Room During Standoff with Police

A man from Jefferson City faces multiple felony charges after reportedly barricading himself in a home in Pilot Grove with a baby on Sunday, according to court documents.

Jacob Johnson, 25, faces charges including second-degree burglary, first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree kidnapping, and fourth-degree domestic assault. He remains in custody at the Cooper County Jail with no bond available.

Johnson faced prior charges in a separate case related to one of the victims from the standoff on Sunday. On August 2, he faced charges for third-degree domestic assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, both classified as misdemeanors. This week’s charges are based on a probable cause statement, which notes that the bond conditions from the August case require him to have no contact with the victim.

Officers responded to a residence in Pilot Grove on Sunday afternoon regarding Johnson’s presence at the victim’s home. A police officer from Pilot Grove arrived to find Johnson in the yard by a vehicle, while the victim was attempting to gather her two children, who were also outside, according to the statement.

According to the statement, Johnson entered the home and blocked the door using a refrigerator. According to the report, an officer responded to the sound of a baby crying, and the child’s mother informed him that an 8-month-old was still located on the lower level of the home.

Johnson reportedly tossed the victim’s cell phone to her, called the phone, and insisted she inform law enforcement to depart and express her desire for him to be present, according to the statement. According to the statement, the officer and a deputy from the Cooper County Sheriff’s Office successfully moved the refrigerator and entered the home.

Officers did not find the baby on the lower level, but traced the sounds of its cries to the upper part of the house, according to the statement. According to the statement, Johnson was locked in a room with the baby. According to the statement, Johnson complied with law enforcement’s request to open the door.
