A mother has been charged with pushing her 1-year-old daughter out of a car in Hialeah, reportedly becoming furious after the child spilled shampoo, as detailed in a recent arrest warrant.
Tasshay Mills, 29, was taken into custody last week on charges of child abuse and neglect following an incident that prompted a missing child alert, before the girl was ultimately located unharmed.
On Thursday night, an event took place in the vicinity of Northwest 37th Avenue and Northwest 54th Street.
Onlookers reported being present at the intersection when the young girl was discovered lying in the street.
A warrant reveals that a woman present in the vehicle with Mills and her one-year-old reported that the child spilled shampoo on the seat, prompting Mills to become upset.
Mills struck the child repeatedly while she cried, growing increasingly furious. He then opened the back door of the car and forcefully pushed the child out, resulting in her falling onto the asphalt, according to the warrant.
Mills left the child alone in the road, only to return later to retrieve the victim, according to the warrant.
A witness had taken the child and was in the process of calling the police when Mills came back and confronted the witness.
A surveillance camera recorded the incident, revealing the witness cradling the girl as they contacted authorities.
“Hey, are you okay? It’s okay, I’m gonna sit down. Oh my God,” the woman says in the video. “Hello? I need you to come, I need you to come.”
Shortly after, two cars arrive, and the mother exits one of them to approach the observer.
A witness reported that the child had multiple pieces of gravel on her face and arm, was bleeding from her head, and was experiencing difficulty breathing, according to the warrant.
According to the warrant, witnesses captured images of Mills’ license plate, aiding law enforcement in identifying her as the individual involved.
A detective from the Hialeah Police reached out to Mills, requesting that she take the child to a hospital. Mills initially agreed, but when she failed to do so, the officer visited her address, only to find that Mills was not present, according to the warrant.
The investigator reached out to Mills once more, and she indicated that she was awaiting a ride. However, when the investigator inquired about the child’s whereabouts for a welfare check, Mills declined to provide the information, according to the warrant.
A woman who was in the vehicle with Mills and her daughter reached out to law enforcement, providing them with Mills’ location at a residence in Miramar, where officers subsequently discovered her alongside a friend.
A friend provided authorities with the whereabouts in Opa-locka where the 1-year-old was located, and following her discovery, the child was transported to Jackson North Medical Center for evaluation.
Mills spoke with detectives, explaining that she had stopped to take the child out in order to clean the seat, though other details of her statements were not disclosed in the warrant.
Mills was first taken into custody in Broward but was processed at a Miami-Dade jail on Tuesday, according to records. On Wednesday, she appeared in front of a judge in Miami-Dade, who set her bond at $7,500 and assigned her a public defender.
