A 41-year-old man from Miami was taken into custody on Wednesday for engaging in a “sexual relationship” with a 15-year-old girl who ran away from her home last week, according to the Miami police.
The suspect’s arrest report states that the victim arrived home on Sunday, accompanied by Lenuam Gonzalez, a Cuban citizen currently employed as a laborer in the U.S.
According to the police, the victim’s mother informed them that her daughter had left home on Friday. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to reach her, Gonzalez picked up the girl’s phone and claimed to be her partner. He advised the teen’s mother to allow her daughter to “fly free like a bird.”
The report states that Gonzalez also cautioned the mother about potential regrets if she contacted the police.
The mother expressed worry for her daughter’s well-being and initially refrained from reaching out to the authorities.
After some time, the woman managed to contact her daughter, who, according to the police, desperately urged her mother not to involve the authorities due to her pregnancy.
As per the report, the victim and Gonzalez went back to her house on Sunday.
After careful consideration, the victim’s mother made the brave decision to contact the authorities and positively identified Gonzalez from a photograph.
According to the police, the victim first stated that Gonzalez was her mother’s boyfriend, but later changed her story, saying that they were just friends.
As per the report, the victim eventually confessed to meeting Gonzalez in January and engaging in a sexual relationship with him after ending a previous relationship.
According to the police, the teenager has informed them that she has engaged in sexual activity with Gonzalez on two separate occasions and is currently three months pregnant. Authorities said she also gave police a home pregnancy test that indicated a positive result.
The arrest report states that Gonzalez became emotional upon being taken into custody and maintained his innocence.
He is being charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a child, interference with custody, and child abuse/impregnating a minor.
As of Thursday afternoon, he was in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting the setting of his bond.
