New York City: A migrant who was reportedly part of a group that attacked two police officers in Times Square has been arrested once more. This time, the arrest was made for their involvement in a planned robbery at a Macy’s store in Queens.
A 19-year-old named Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel was taken into custody on Tuesday evening. He is facing charges of robbery and petit larceny, according to the authorities.
Four individuals have been charged for their alleged involvement in an incident at the Queens Center Mall. It is claimed that they entered the mall and worked together to steal clothes, which they attempted to conceal in bags.
During the incident, a 27-year-old security guard was confronted by a group, resulting in a physical altercation where one of the suspects punched him in the face.
The security guard sustained minor injuries, but declined medical assistance at the scene.
Gomez-Izquiel was escorted out of the 110th Precinct station in handcuffs shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, en route to Queens Criminal Court for his arraignment on the recent robbery and petty larceny charges.
A teenage migrant, dressed in a blue hoodie and sweatpants, appeared visibly dejected as he was led to an NYPD SUV. Despite being approached by reporters in both English and Spanish, he chose not to respond to their inquiries.
Gomez-Izquiel faced charges of second-degree assault on a police officer and obstructing governmental administration for the incident that occurred in Times Square at the end of January, which was captured on camera.
The individuals implicated in Tuesday’s reported theft were spotted escaping towards the west on Queens Boulevard, carrying approximately $608 worth of various clothing items.
As per information from police sources, one of the suspects was apprehended at a city tent shelter on Randall’s Island in the early hours of Wednesday.
In a recent development, Yarwuin Madris, an 18-year-old migrant, was arraigned on assault charges on Wednesday. He has been ordered to be held without bail.
Madris is among the six migrants who have been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury for their involvement in the attack on two NYPD officers, namely NYPD Lt. Ben Kurian and NYPD Police Officer Zunxu Tian.
According to prosecutor Zachary Kotin, the individual in question allegedly engaged in physical altercations with law enforcement officers. Manhattan Judge Stephen Antignani has concurred with the DA’s office recommendation to hold Madris without bail.
“His proper age remains unknown,” remarked the judge. “I’m not sure if we’re aware of his actual name. From what I gather, he hasn’t been around for long and is now facing charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer. That’s the extent of my knowledge.
Furthermore, it was reported on Wednesday that Yohenry Brito, who was previously the sole migrant detained in connection with the cop attack, was recently released after a Brooklyn church paid his $15,000 bail.
