The Machine Gun Kelly, also known as Richard Colson Baker, is a $25 million net worth American rapper. Baker has established himself as one of the most distinct and popular Hip-Hop artists in the music industry today. Baker has had considerable success as an actor outside of music.
Early Life
Richard Colson Baker was born in Houston, Texas on April 22, 1990. While he was growing up, both of his parents were missionaries, so he traveled frequently with his family. As a child, I spent time in Germany, Egypt, and many other countries around the world. Baker also lived in a number of different US states. After his mother left the family, he and his father eventually settled in Denver.
Baker was bullied as a teen and began fighting back with words. He eventually fell in love with rap and began working on his own music. Baker lived in a neighbor’s basement and experimented with drugs after his father abandoned him to work for the Army in Kuwait. Stamp of Approval, his first mixtape, was recorded during this time. Baker eventually dropped out of school, prompting his father to transport him to Kuwait to live.
Career
Baker persuaded an MC manager to help him launch his career while finishing high school after returning to the United States. Baker adopted the stage name “Machine Gun Kelly” at this point to reflect his fast-paced vocal delivery. MGK began performing in small venues before moving on to the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
He also made an appearance on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle. Following that, he released his second mixtape, 100 Words and Running. MGK was gaining exposure during this time, but he was still struggling financially. His father kicked him out of the family home, he became a father himself, and he worked at Chipotle to support himself.
